A Farewell To Arms

The title of the film under consideration is A Farewell to Arms. It is a 1957 American drama film directed by Charles Vidor. The screenplay by Ben Hecht, based in part on a 1930 play by Laurence Stallings, was the second feature film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's 1929 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. The previous one dates back to 1932. It is distinguished by its hand-picked cast - Rock Hudson as Frederick Henry, Jennifer Jones as Catherine Barkley.

First of all, let me give you the brief reconstruction of the events. Frederick Henry is an American, serving as an ambulance driver for the Italian Army during World War I. He falls in love with a nurse - Catherine Barkley. During the retreat of the Italian Army, Henry deserts from his regiment and together with pregnant Catherine make their way to neutral Switzerland. For some months they live happily, but in the spring Catherine gives a birth to a still-born child, and dies shortly afterward.

The main thing, I‘d like to mention is the play of the actors who managed to feel their characters, their souls, mood and the way of thinking even. I am amazed by the way they took the message of the writer. However, sometimes the development of the love affair did not seem natural, they overacted.

Further, I’d like to concentrate exactly on this overacting. In my opinion, the director shifted the accents a lot. This film lacks that all-important awareness of the inescapable presence and pressure of war. It focuses on the love affair of 2 characters. The essential excitement of a violent love is strangely missing here. Mr. Hudson is most noticeably unbending, as if he was cautious and shy, but Miss Jones plays the famous Catherine Barkley with bewildering nervous moves and grimaces. The show of devotion between two people is intensely acted, not realized, but, as I’ve already mentioned, it was a peculiar feature for me in their acting.

To conclude, the film helped me to imagine the main heroes, the events described in the book. I really enjoyed watching the film because I watch such “old” films rarely but always admire the work and skillfulness of the actors.

In Love and War

In Love and War is a 1996 romance drama film based on the book, Hemingway in Love and War by Henry S. Villard and James Nagel, starring Mackenzie Astin, Chris O'Donnell, Sandra Bullock, and Margot Steinberg. This film takes place during World War I, and is based on the World War I experiences of the writer Ernest Hemingway. It was directed by Richard Attenborough. The film was entered into the 47th Berlin International Film Festival.

Speaking about “In Love and War” we can discuss a different way of love-development. War here is a just a kind of setting and a background for feelings. It can be proved by the title - the word “Love” is placed on the primary position not accidentally. This means that the film is about love, relationship and fates, not about war itself.

Ernie’s feelings to Agnes, his nurse, I can describe only as a passion, a flame. She has prejudices about the age-difference between them and her love to Ernie can be considered as love to a kid, a young man at war.

War is one of the main themes of Ernest Hemingway’s creative work. The main character of In Love and War fought hard to have the right to participate in war. Hemingway emphasizes that heroism doesn’t only exist in the front line, but also in hospitals, where the nurses fought for the lives of soldiers throughout day and night.

Speaking about main characters, Henry and Ernie are cool-headed, unselfish, proud, ambitious, ready for true feelings men, while their beloved are a little different. Agnes has too much prejudices, which destroy everything at the end, while Catherine is devoted to Henry, can not think of a day without him, wants everything to be done his way. It can be proved by the repetion “I’m a good wife. Everything is fine. Do you still love me?” I believe that Agnes was the prototype for Catherine. Hemingway just wrote his semi-autobiographical novel without traits he did not like, it is a kind of his dream, desire to change the events.

So, coming to the conclusion, I’d like to say, this film impressed me greatly. Such things as love and war seem to be incongruous, but Love and War  proves the contrary. Besides, they have a marvelous historical value as it is first-hand records of the events during the World War I. They placed me into the time of war and Ernest Hemingway. It helped me to imagine what kind of a person he was and what influenced his creative talent.

Higher Education in Britain and the USA

 1. What are the admission requirements to the colleges and universities in the USA/Britain?

Entrance to British universities is rather strict selection process? based on an interview. If students don't get the grades, specified in the offer, a place cannot be taken up. Some universities as Oxford and Cambridge have an entrance exam before the interview stage. As for American universities, students who want to study at a college or university have to take a standardized test, e.g. the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) or the ACT (American College Test). Students from other countries outside the US must take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

 2. What are the three types of schools in higher education?
As far as I know, there are graduate school, separate professional schools such as a medical school or a law school.

 3. What degrees are offered by schools of higher learning in the USA/Britain? What are the requirements for these degrees?

In Britain a first degree, which is usually an honours degree, generally takes three years. Most courses end with exams called finals. Results are given as classes (= grades): a first is the highest class, seconds are often split between upper second and lower second, and below that is a third. Graduates may add the letters BA (Bachelor of Arts) or BSc (Bachelor of Science) after their name. Some graduates go on to study for a further degree, often a master’s degree or a doctorate.
In the USA students are given grades at the end of each course. The highest grade is A; the lowest is F, which means that the student has failed the course and will not get credit for taking it. To check a student’s overall progress, the university calculates a grade point average (GPA). Students who finish their degree with a high GPA may be awarded Latin honours, of which the highest is summa cum laude.

4. What is a credit in the US system of higher education? How many credits must an undergraduate student earn to receive a bachelor’s degree? How can they be earned?

A student has to earn a certain number of "credits" (about 120) in order to receive a degree at the end of four years of college. Credits are earned by attending lectures or laboratory classes and completing assignments and examinations.Students are given grades at the end of each course. The highest grade is A; the lowest is F, which means that the student has failed the course and will not get credit for taking it. To check a student’s overall progress, the university calculates a grade point average (GPA).

5. What steps do students have to take to enroll in a college/university for admission? Speak about the exams they take – PSAT, SAT, ACT.

American high school students who want to take to enroll in a college or university for admission have to take a standardized test, e.g. the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) or the ACT (American College Test). Each college or university decides on the minimum score it will accept, though test scores are never the only factor taken into account.

6. What financial assistance are applicants eligible for? What is college scholarship, grants, loan? Explain and bring out the essence of student financial aid?

Students whose families cannot afford to pay the full amount apply for financial aid, receive a financial aid package which may be a combination of grants from the government, a scholarship, a student loan and work-study( a part-time job at the college).

7. What is a GPA (Grade Point Average)?

To check a student's overall progress, the university calculates a grade point average(GPA). Students who finish their degree with a high GPA may be awarded Latin honours.

8. What is the role of a student’s counselor? Specify the function of career development and job placement within a university.

Student counselors, also called guidance counselors, are professionals who help students at the high school or college level

10. What are the sources of funding for universities and colleges (both public and private)?

A public university is a university that is predominantly funded by public means through a national or subnational government. Private universities are universities not operated by governments, although many receive tax breaks, public student loans, and grants.

11. What is an undergraduate student? A graduate student?

An undergrad student is one who hasn't graduate yet from a college. In college, working on a 4-year degree, their first year they are call Freshmen; the 2nd year, Sophomores; the 3rd year Juniors, and their 4th Seniors. All of those are "undergrads," which is short for "undergraduates." After they get a degree, later, if they stay in school to work on an advanced amount, then they're called graduate students. Undergraduate study is the 4 year term in which you study for your Bachelor's amount. A graduate student is someone who has their Bachelor's degree and is moving on to pursue their Master's level or PhD. Anyone who does not posses a Bachelor's degree but is pursuing one is an undergrad student.
A graduate student- a student who is studying for a degree that is higher than the one received after four years of study at a college or university.

12. Are you for written or oral examinations? Which ones are more objective?

Oral examinations are rather complicted that written papers. They presupose inevitable necessity to face the examiners, to speak to them openly and even to answer their additional questions. Sometimes students may simply stumble through the exam because of their nervousness and anxiety. That is why I considere that written exams are more objective and are popular with the stydents.

13. What examinations (oral or written) are more popular with Russian students? Describe the psychological types of students of your group.

As you know, every student has his own point of view. Some choose written exam in the hope for cheating. Others prefer to speak face to face with their examiners and prove that they know well a given material or even they would like to go to the mat. To my way of thinking, written examinations are rather popular in Russia then written papers. You have not to worry, to nerve unlike viva exams.

14 Would you like to study in the USA or Great Britain? Why? Why not? What are the requirements for foreign students to study in the USA or Great Britain?

Well, to be honest, it s a brilliant idea to study abroad. There is always BUT. Firstly, you have to work harder, harder, harder to achieve their aim. Secondly, all depends on parents' income, because you are young and as a rule don't have a job to earn yourself for study. On the other hand it would be unfair to depend completely on parents.
Students from countries outside the US who are not native speakers of English must also take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).

2. While studying I faced many problems, which were closely connected with unfairness and injustice from the direction of my teachers. Some of them were bad not only at teaching but also at holier-than-thou and irreverent attitude towards us. Frankly speaking, I never forget how the teacher of biology punched my classmate because of a bad behavior. All that had effect on me and my pupils. Worst of all was when they talked up our personal life and spread unacceptable gossips. That is why I was irritated at them and at the educational process.

  3. Studying is part of a process of change and, sometimes, change can cause a lot of anxiety. If you go to university straight from school, you are facing the challenge of leaving home, separating from your parents and beginning the process of finding your identity, as an adult, and your place in the world. This is a big psychological upheaval. When you become a student you may feel differently about yourself, and other people may react to you differently. There may be sports, social and political activities open to you now, which you've never tried before. This has two aspects: it can be very exciting, but it can also be terrifying. It can be easy to take on too many things, because you don't want to miss out on any new opportunities. Accommodation, finance, food, and travel can all present daunting problems in your first weeks. Ask for help from older students, from other first-years, or from your teachers. Don't be proud - you are not alone in your difficulties.
Laboratory Work 2
1.    They use the standard system of grading: A, B, C, В, F
2.    For some courses you can get satisfactory or unsatisfactory grade.
3.    We have a standard mark system: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 for exams and for pass-fail courses there’s another system.
4,5 As practically all the countries pass to Bachelor’s system so there’s a system of points which students get for each task they should complete. At the end of the course these points are counted and if there’s enough to pass this course they get a pass or a mark.

Laboratory Work 3
1.    You can drop the course within the first 3 weeks of the semester. First, you need a signature of a professor of the course you want to drop on your official drop-card. Then, you need come to the advisor to get his or her signature.
2.    You can’t officially drop the course after the 3 weeks of the semester. If you have some problems with your course and you want to drop it you can’t do it.
If you stop attending a course without going through the official drop procedure the course will remain on your schedule and you receive a failing grade.
3.    To avoid any problems you should follow these rules.

Laboratory Work 4
1.    Library, Students’ Centre, Administration Complex, the Auditorium
2.    Library, the Dance Hall, where students can take part in diverse performing and hobby groups; the canteen and several cafeterias where students can have a snack

3.    First, on the ground floor there’s a library and a reading room where you can get diverse books, journals, magazines. There’s also on the first floor a canteen. Here the meals are very tasty. On the each floor you can make a photocopy. On the second floor you also can find an accounting department if you have some problems with your scholarship. On the third floor there’s a local trade of students. Also we have different hobby groups which can interest you: theatre, dance or singing.

Dangerous Minds

The title of the film I’m going to tell you about is Dangerous Minds, directed by John N. Smith. It is distinguished by its hand-picked cast - Michelle Pfeiffer, George Dzundza, Robin Bartlett. What is worth mentioning is the real background for the film. Dangerous Minds was adapted from a memoir by Lou Anne Johnson entitled -My Posse Don't Do Homework.

When a retired U.S. Marine, LouAnne Johnson, decides to become a teacher, she is given a class of tough, street-wise kids, involved in gangs and drugs. Her initially meek demeanor, small stature, and white skin earn her the nickname "white bread" from her students. Determined to have them trust and respect her, she quickly changes her presentation, wearing leather jackets, teaching karate to her students and cursing in the classroom. Creating her own curriculum for her "socially challenged" class, she starts having them read poetry, using Bob Dylan lyrics to teach symbolism. Johnson rewards her students for their hard work by giving them candy bars to say good job, toy prizes and trip to a boardwalk theme park. Along with helping her students with school work, she also provides emotional support to several students, including a couple of wise-cracking boys who are too caught up in street politics for their own good, and a teen who's dealing with the reality of being pregnant in high school. Although she intends to leave at the end of the year, the students quote the lyrics of a Dylan Thomas poem that they learned and insist that she's their "light" and refuse to let her leave. Touched, she agrees to stay.

I’m deeply impressed by the way Luanne made the teens listen to her. At first I thought it would be impossible. She ultimately gets them to open up to learning and literature, through a combination of bribery (candy bars) and intimidation (her karate training from the Marines comes in handy), and she's able to reach out to the students who need her the most: Callie, a bright girl who believes she's thrown away her future when she becomes pregnant; Emilio, a macho bully whose violence is stifling his academic potential; and Raul, the brightest kid in the class, who is afraid to show his intelligence.

Although the story is based on a real one, such stories always seem almost impossible for me. It’s too difficult to grow up some kind of hope and will in neglected children and only strong persons can do it, but not at once. Michele Pfeifer is great in the film. She managed to express real excitement, resolution and fearlessness. Despite her fragile appearance she played a role of a strong and experienced woman and did brilliantly.

“Dangerous Minds" is indeed a powerful, emotionally charged film that knocked me over the head with its solid acting, its skillful manipulation of the emotions and the true-to-life ABC of teaching. Really, I’m grateful to have such a thought provoking film in my collection. I think, it does deserve watching.

Laboratory Works

Laboratory Work 3

1) In my opinion, the main reason for students to stay away is laziness and lack of willpower. Most pupils just can't make themselves get up from bed, get dressed and go to school, which is sometimes several metres away( I don't even speak of those who travel far to get to school in time). Some children are bored at classes, when they have much more interesting activities to be engaged in, the more so that small children often can't understand what benefits education can provide with, as they don't think about the future.

1) Dr Greenway implies that some children who play truant are never punished (C)

2) Why do some parents take their children on holiday during term time? To spend time together(B)

3) Why is it difficult for schools to convince students to attend regularly? Some teachers behave irresponsibly (C)

4) How has the government reacted to truancy? They are only just beginning to help (B)

5) Why are the government having talks with travel agent? To make sure that children don't play truant (B)

6) What are the aims of behaviour improuvement projects? To teach parents to be responsible (A)

7) What does Dr Greenway say about the law against truancy? Many parents face criminal charges (C)

3)  I would like to choose three main aspects. First of all, lessons should be made more interesting and some new methods and technologies of education should be found to attract children's attention to studies-monotonous school routine only makes pupils bored. Secondly, parents need to be responsible for their children's doing well at school and set a good exemple for children themselves. Finally, they should teach their kids to respect school together with teachers.

Laboratory Work 4

1) According to the speakers, the main advantage of a state school is its being free, while public schools are quite expensive. But at puplic scools, instructors are better, as well as facilities. At the same time in state schools students are mixed (both rich and poor). The girl thinks that both types are expensive, but students' being mixed-up at state schools makes them more interesting and captivating. The young man says that the advantage of going to public school is an ability to get a better job. If i personally was in the girl's shoes, I 'd better go to public school, as it provides more opportunities to settle my affairs well.

Similarities:

-school education is compulsory
-there are state schools and independent schools
-school education includes primary and secondary schools-
schools subjects are almost the same in 3 countries
-students have to take exams before leaving school
-there exist school uniforms in 3 countries
-there are sets of exams in 3 countries
-there are always exams at the end of school life

Differences:

-in the USA a kindergarden is compulsory
-school daily routine is not the same in 3 countries
-extra-curricular activities, optional courses ( are not usually present in Russia)
-different stages of education
-in Britain and in the USA exams are taken several times through school life

Review

Movie has a great impact on people. We like to watch movies because they tell us different stories and make us think about the way we live. Now I’d like to speak about the movie The Ron Clark Story.

The Ron Clark Story is a 2006 television film based on the real educator Ron Clark. It centers on a white teacher from a small town, who moves to New York City and tries to make a difference in the lives of his students. Naturally, nobody thinks it is possible and even the students themselves do not believe in their progress and success.

In fact, the movie touches upon several educational problems. Let me start with the problem of teaching. Nowadays there are lots of teaching methods, but some schools remain using only the traditional ones. In the movie we may see such a problem. In fact, the principal wants the pupils to have high scores for tests only in order to get governmental funding. He does not believe in the new methods of educating. Nevertheless, Ron Clark continues his new teaching.

One more problem that is touched upon in the movie is the discipline. Ron Clark gets a class with poor marks and a poor motivation. So Ron Clark does everything as a teacher, trying to gain respect from both teachers and pupils. He tries different techniques, for example: he uses visual aids and songs in order to make the process interesting for the pupils. His main principles are: to be a family, respect each other, dream big and take risks. Only with the help of these principles, Ron Clark can motivate the children.

But for excellent results the kids should also do exercises, read books and remember lots of facts. Parents should help a child to cope with all possible difficulties in the course of study. However, the movie shows us the children from problem families or families with the only parent and many kids. Indeed, Ron Clark finds the solution to the problem – he gives extra classes in cafes, at home throughout the week. Even when he falls ill, he records his lessons for kids. At last, his efforts haven't been wasted. His pupils get high scores at the exam.

Finally, the movie The Ron Clark Story shows the education system from the inside. As a result, the education problems become evident. Unfortunately, nowadays most children are not really motivated in studying. That's why each school demands such great teachers as Ron Clark.

Pleasure Reading ( Theatre by Somerset Maugham) 26-29

Rehearsals began and distracted Julia's troubled mind. Besides Roger, her son, arrrived from Austria to see his mother. He had been spending a few weeks on a Carinthian lake, talking about everything: about his future profession, about their relationship with Roger's father and mainly about theatre. Three days later Roger went up to Scotland and Julia studied her part, creating the character she was going to act by observation. Finally everything was success. The play went well from the beginning. There had been great applause after each act. Julie gave an excellent performance. After her triump, she realised that never in all her life there was another moment like this.  She had a sudden desire to see nobody and be seen by nobody. She wanted just for one hour to be obscure. She took a taxi and went to the restaurant, where her favourite table was waiting for her.

Pleasure Reading ( Theatre by Somerset Maugham) 21-25

One day Tom acquainted Julia with a young actress Avice Crichton, who was playing in Sunday night show. After watching her performing, Julie realized that Tom had fallen in love with Avice. Julie knew, that once their relationship came to the end, that's why she let him out. Tom was going to join Avice Crichton at the supper party, while Julie went to bed. Next morning she went to Paris to come to see her mother and relax. There Julia spent several happy days choosing her clothes and having the first fittings. She enjoyed every moment of them. In a few days she left for London to begin her rehearsals.

Pleasure Reading ( Theatre by Somerset Maugham) 16-20

Julia wasn’t satisfied with her life with Michael, because of his placidity. Michael’s character didn’t change: he remained kind and polite, but Julia wanted love. After some period of time their calm life was disturbed by war. To Julia’s pride and anguish Michael went to war as an officer. His life in army wasn’t really hard, but during the war Michael aged. Julia noticed that, when her husband returned home, and fell out of love with him though he still was rather handsome. Everything that had attracted Julia to Michael, at that time annoyed her. At the same time their business went almost perfect and they managed to get enough money to open their theater. They also moved form a small flat to a modern house, because Julia was pregnant. Time passed, and their theater gave them a lot of money, but Michael’s character was becoming worse and worse, and Julia couldn’t understand, why some years before that she had been full of passion to this man.

Pleasure Reading ( Theatre by Somerset Maugham) 11-15

In this part the author finishes the biography of Michael and Julia. Michael’s work in America was not successful and the man, who had engaged him, refused to sign a new contract with Michael. Gosselyn was really confused, and he had to return home, Julia had strange feelings: she didn’t like, that her love was deeply mortified, but at the same time she was pleasant to see him again. Soon after Michael’s return, he offered Julia to marry him as soon as possible, and that event made Julia more than happy. Michael also decided to move to London.

Review 4 "Great Gatsby"

A couple days ago I was offered an opportunity of watching an awesome a 2013 3D romantic drama film. An adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel of the same name, the film was co-written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher and Jason Clarke. It follows the life and times of millionaire Jay Gatsby and his neighbor Nick, who recounts his encounter with Gatsby at the height of the Roaring Twenties. The film was released on May 10, 2013 in 3D.
Now I'd like to share my thoughts, feelings and personal view concerning this film. To begin with, let's consider its plot, cast, production, development, costumes and my own impression.

Cast
Robert Redford as Jay Gatsby
Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanan
Bruce Dern as Tom Buchanan
Sam Waterston as Nick Carraway
Karen Black as Myrtle Wilson
Scott Wilson as George Wilson
Lois Chiles as Jordan Baker
Edward Herrmann as Ewing Klipspringer
Howard Da Silva as Meyer Wolfsheim
Kathryn Leigh Scott as Catherine
Regina Baff as Miss Baedecker
Vincent Schiavelli as Thin Man
Roberts Blossom as Mr. Gatz
Beth Porter as Mrs. McKee
Patsy Kensit as Pammy Buchanan

Plot
“The Great Gatsby” follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into thecaptivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

Development

Prior to this version there had already been a Broadway play and numerous film adaptations of F. Scott Fitzgerald's acclaimed 1925 novel of the same name. In December 2008,Variety magazine reported that this film adaptation was to be made with Baz Luhrmann to direct it.

Luhrmann stated that he planned it to be more timely due to its theme of criticizing the often irresponsible lifestyles of wealthy people. In order to commit to the project, in September 2010 Luhrmann moved with his family from Australia to Chelsea in Lower Manhattan, where he had intended to film The Great Gatsby. While Luhrmann was at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2011, he told The Hollywood Reporter that he had been workshopping The Great Gatsby in 3D, though he had not yet decided whether to shoot in the format. In late January 2011, Luhrmann showed doubt about staying on board with the project, before deciding to stay.

In 2010 it was reported that the movie was being set up by Sony Pictures Entertainment but by 2011 Warner Bros. was close to acquiring a deal to finance and take worldwide distribution of The Great Gatsby, according to Deadline Hollywood.

Costumes

The Great Gatsby achieved the iconic 1920's look by altering pieces from the Prada and Miu Miu fashion archives.
Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada were behind the wardrobe and worked closely together to create pieces with "the European flair that was emerging amongst the aristocratic East Coast crowds in the 1920s".

Impression

First of all, I'd like to underline that this amazing film supressed all my imagination. There is no doubt that Great Gatsby was really worth-watching film. This film is  reaaly GREAT. It is visually amazing, brilliant in its comparison of decadence and greed, with the unshakeable vision of Gatsby, who is really a man, who will sail the ends of the earth for love, even if his desires are set upon someone. That's why I found Great Gatsby  a very entertaining film with excellent acting and a superb plot.

The article published on the website http://www.guardian.co.uk on May 30, 2013 is headlined "These New Puritans: 'I didn't know how to record a hawk, and now I do'". The article reports at length about These New Puritans (sometimes abbreviated to TNPS) , a British art rock band from the Southend-on-Sea area. The group consists of Jack Barnett (songwriter, producer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist), his twin brother George Barnett (drums, loops), Thomas Hein (bass guitar, sampler, drums), and Sophie Sleigh-Johnson (keyboards, sampler).

The author of the article, Alexis Petridis, the Guardian's head rock and pop critic, carries a lot of comment on the These New Puritans' second album Hidden was rightly being acclaimed as one of the most remarkable releases of 2013, the band's mastermind Jack Barnett announced that he already had a follow-up planned out. Critics boggled at Hidden's mix of ferocious Japanese taiko drumming, brass and woodwind, electronics inspired by Jamaican dancehall: music that suggested that These New Puritans were a markedly different proposition than they had initially appeared to be.

There is every reason to beleve that the Barnett's voice is very much still in evidence, albeit sharing vocal duties with a Portuguese jazz and fado singer (female), the owner of the lowest bass voice in Britain (male), of whom more later, and a children's choir. "I always say things like that, and I'm always just completely wrong. That's why I'm not going to say what I'm going to do next," he sighs.

The article concludes by saying that as you may have gathered, Field of Reeds is a most unconventional album. If you are looking for comparisons, then maybe the sharp left turns taken by Japan and Talk Talk in their latter years offer a clue. But that's not really helpful. Best just to listen using the player below – and tell us what you make of it.

To sum it up, I can't share the author's view as I have not listened These New Puritans et. Anyway I found this article very useful, and of good value. The message of the author was clear to understand his opinion to thisthis group.

The article published on the website http://www.guardian.co.uk on May 29, 2013 is headlined "Glastonbury 2013: a lineup proving you can keep everybody happy". The author of the article Sam Wolfson, a journalist who writes mostly about music for the national media and a slew of popular culture mags and sites , carries a lot of comments on the Glastonbury 2013 Festival .

The author of the article Barry Neild points out that Glastonbury has announced the lineup for this year, and about bloody time. As the other festivals spent the past few months carving up this year's headliners, it seemed Michael Eavis would be left begging for scraps. Beyoncé, Rihanna, Eminem, the Kings Of Leon, the Killers, the Stone Roses, Justin Timberlake and My Bloody Valentine and Elton John had all been booked in exclusive deals that would prevent them stepping foot on Worthy Farm.

It was revealed by the author of the article that undoubtedly, it's the inclusivity of the event, rather than the headliners, that most impresses. A few years ago Eavis appeared on the BBC News channel's interview programme Hardtalk. The presenter, Stephen Sackur, comfortable with taking politicians to task on corruption and hypocrisy, looked ridiculous on the farm porch trying to apply the same tactics. Accprding to the autor's words, Glastonburyt is a great pleasure for everyone.

The author concludes the article by saying that the festival is also one of the few places where children are afforded the same good times as adults – 13-year olds are free to roam through the fire-pits of Arcadia at 5am with no one checking what they're swigging on. And UK garage obsessives Disclosure, baby-faced troubadour King Krule and Odd Future head honchos Tyler the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt, all of whom were born in the 90s, will provide some high-quality children's entertainment.

Well, to my view, this festival is considerd to be the most unispiring line up in the history. I love new bands I love live music.I find the festival as a unique feast of music set on a huge site offering a grand scale of entertainment unlike any other festival in the world. . As well as music from nearly every genre imaginable on over 50 stages, there's performing arts with cabaret, theatre, circus, children's entertainment, poetry, healing, green crafts and information and much more. Vibrant, spontaneous, colourful, and hugely entertaining festival.

The article published on the website http://www.guardian.co.uk on May 20, 2013 is headlined "Taylor Swift wins eight Billboard awards. Justin Bieber, Gotye and Rihanna among the other big winners at music industry ceremony in Las Vegas". The article carries a lot of comment on the victory of Taylor Swift. A data journalist, James Ball, the author of the article pays tribute to Taylor Swift who was the big winner at the Billboard music awards, scooping eight out of her 11 nominations, including top artist and top Billboard 200 album for Red.

Speaking of Taylor Swift it is necessary to note that Swift gave a colourful performance of her hit 22, starting backstage and working her way to the main stage on the back of a bike with help from a dozen background dancers and a flurry of red balloons. Whereas Justin Bieber, who performed twice, won three awards, including top male artist, social artist and the fan-voted milestone award.

It also was mentioned that other nominees win at Billboard Music Awards. Among them, Miguel who had a show-stopping performance, Maroon 5 and fun. were nominated for 11 awards and walked away with one win each in pre-telecast announcements. Gotye and Rihanna had the second-most wins with four awards each.Nicki Minaj, who won the first award in the live telecast for top rap artist, beating out Drake, Flo Rida, Pitbull and Psy. "I definitely did not expect this one," she said.

The article concludes by saying that Taylor Swift was honored as Woman of the Year at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards! Swift was honored as Top Artist, Top Female Artist and Top Billboard 200 artist in ceremonies held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas where awards were handed out in 45 categories, 10 of them on the ABC telecast. Swift received the night's top honor, Artist of the Year, as well as Top Billboard 20 Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Country Artist and Top Digital Songs Artist. "Red" was Tops in the Billboard 200 and country albums categories; her "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" was named Top Country Song.

To sum it up, I'd like to say that Taylor Swift's performance was awesome. She is the embodiment of everything right and a woman of great talent who brings a smile of pleasure to the audience’s faces.

The article published on the website http://www.guardian.co.uk on May 19, 2013 is headlined"Eurovision prize goes to Denmark, but real winner is Swedish host". The author of the article Barry Neild, a freelance journalist, reports at length that the 58th instalment of the Eurovision song contest, which aims to draw nations together won the hot favourite, Denmark's Emmelie de Forest with 281 points for her song Only Teardrops.

The author of the article Barry Neild points out that the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest took place on 18th of May. This weekend the action moved to Malmö in southern Sweden. The following 39 broadcasters have signed up: Albania (RTSH), Austria (ORF), Armenia (AMPTV), Azerbaijan (Ictimai TV), Belarus (BTRC), Belgium (RTBF), Bulgaria (BNT), Croatia (HRT), Cyprus (CyBC), Denmark (DR), Estonia (ERR), Finland (YLE), France (France3), Georgia (GPB), Germany (NDR), Greece (ERT), Hungary (MTV), Iceland (RÚV), Ireland (RTÉ), Israel (IBA), Italy (RAI), Latvia (LTV), Lithuania (LRT), FYR Macedonia (MKRTV), Malta (PBS), Moldova (TRM), Montenegro (RTCG), the Netherlands (TROS), Norway (NRK), Romania (TVR), Russia (C1R), San Marino (SMTV), Serbia (RTS), Slovenia (RTVSLO), Spain (TVE), Sweden (SVT), Switzerland (SRG SSR), Ukraine (NTU) and the United Kingdom (BBC).

It was revealed by the author of the article that Ukraine came third and Greece was fourth with the rabble-rousing "Alcohol Is Free". It is necessary to mention that Finland's Krista Siegfrids, meanwhile, ended her performance of Marry Me with an eyebrow-raising girl-on-girl kiss, but set women's equality back to 1977 with lyrics such as: "I'm your slave and you're my master." Then Iceland fielded Ingi Gunnlaugsson, a man whose hairstyle bore more than a passing resemblance to Dougal from The Magic Roundabout. After that, Azerbaijan's Farid Mammadov, who sang atop a Perspex box containing a man who, happily, turned out not to be magician David Blaine, and Roberto Bellarosa, an 18-year-old from Belgium, also scored fairly well. Then there was Romania's Cezar. Dressed like a vampiric Elvis, Cezar sang in an alarming falsetto surrounded by men and women dancing in tight lycra.

The article concludes by saying that this year’s winner of the Eurovision Song Contest Emmelie de Forest from Denmark is “overwhelmed, surprised but happy”. That’s what she told to us right after the show. She is very thankful for all the fans and viewers across Europe for the support!

Well, to my point of view, 2013 Eurovisioon Contest is a jolly period of time. So it’s hard to predict a winner, but Emmelie de Forest really deserves this triumph with her unforgettable song "Only Teardrops". As for me, her song has a really good melody and a good tempo. It also gives you something to think about; how we treat each other and the world.  Undoubtedly, it is melancholic and gives hope for the future.

Anonymous is an upcoming historical thriller directed by Roland Emmerich. It stars Rhys Ifans and Vanessa Redgrave. It will be released theatrically in the United States on 30 September 2011. It is produced by Centropolis Entertainment and Studio Babelsberg, and distributed by Columbia Pictures.

PLOT

In Elizabethan England, political intrigue abounds between the Tudors and the Cecils for the succession of Queen Elizabeth I (Vanessa Redgrave), as the Essex Rebellion moves against her. The film follows the involvement of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford (Rhys Ifans), as not only the incestuous lover of Queen Elizabeth, but also the true author of the works of William Shakespeare.

CAST

Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Elizabeth I. Redgrave commented that "It’s very interesting, the fractures, in this extraordinary creature.... I only hope that I've been able to respond to Roland in this script sufficiently to be able to just give a little glimpse of this fracturing, this black hole, with shafts of brief sunlight."
Rhys Ifans as Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford / "William Shake-speare"
Jamie Campbell Bower as young Oxford
David Thewlis as William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley, longtime adviser to Queen Elizabeth. De Vere came to live in his household as a ward of the Queen at age 12 and became Burghley's son-in-law at age 21. Burghley is thought to have inspired the character Polonius.
Edward Hogg as Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, William Cecil's son and successor
Joely Richardson as young Princess Elizabeth
Xavier Samuel as Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton, Shake-speare dedicatee and the focus of his sonnets; prospective suitor to Cecil's granddaughter Elizabeth de Vere
Rafe Spall as William Shakspere of Stratford
Antje Thiele as Lady de Vere
Robert Emms as Thomas Dekker, dramatist
Tony Way as Thomas Nashe, poet and satirist
Sebastian Armesto as Ben Jonson, poet, First Folio editor, and friend of Susan de Vere
Trystan Gravelle as Christopher Marlowe, poet and dramatist
Sebastian Reid as Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, executed for treason
Mark Rylance as a Shakespearean actor at the Globe Theatre
Sir Derek Jacobi as Narrator (Prologue)

DEVELOPMENT

Screenwriter John Orloff had penned the script back in the late 1990s, but it was shelved after Shakespeare in Love came out in 1998. It was almost greenlit as "The Soul of the Age" for a 2005 release, with a budget of $30 to $35 million. However, the financing proved to be "a risky undertaking," director Roland Emmerich told Screen Daily at the time. In October 2009, Emmerich stated, "It's very hard to make get a movie like this made, and I want to make it in a certain way. I've actually had this project for 8 years. It's always supposed to be my next movie, but this time I'm really going to do it because I'm already set to shoot on March 22 ."

In a November 2009 interview, Emmerich said of the film:

At a press conference at Studio Babelsberg on April 29, 2010, Emmerich noted that the success of his more commercial films made this one possible and that he got the cast he wanted without the pressure to come up with at least two A-list American actors.

IMPRESSION

First of all, I'd like to underline that this amazing film supressed all my imagination. There is no doubt that Anonymous was really worth-watching film. Of course, in the beginning I had to work a little, remembering the names, remembering the history of England. But it's worth it. The truth is that I was fully absorbed in the era of that tensed and gloomy time, watching with interest the fates of the heroes. That's why I found Anonymous to be a very entertaining film with excellent acting and a superb plot.

Pleasure Reading ( Theatre by Somerset Maugham) 6-10

In the next chapter  some more information about biographies of Julia and Michael was told to the reader. When Michael joined the troop, Julia had been playing in Middlepool for a year and had already become a local theater star. Because of Gosselyn’s attractive appearance young actress fell in love with him. But Michael accepted all her compliments not exactly with indifference, but as he might have accepted a compliment on a fine old house that had been in his family for generations. They spent a lot of time with each other, but unfortunately to Julia, she was only a friend for Michael. Character of Gosselyn was far from perfect – he was very greedy, but it wasn’t a problem for Julia. All her attempts to charm Michael were not successful.
But one day Julia was invited to Michael’s parents to Cheltenham. Of course she agreed. During this visit, on the first sight, elder Gosselyns were rather kind to her, but Julia realized, that at the same time they were taking stock at her. She used all her talent to receive their sympathy. And her efforts were praised. One evening Michael said to her, that she made a good impression on his parents and asked her to marry him. Surely she couldn’t deny him. And in spite of the fact, that she knew, that he didn’t really love her, Julia was more than happy.Soon all the troop knew about their relations. Michael didn’t hurry to marry, and he was planning to save up some money and to open his own theater. Julia didn’t like this situation, because she wanted to marry Michael as soon as possible. More of this one American manager offered a one year contract to Michael, Gosslelyn agreed. So he was going to leave Julia for a year.

Pleasure Reading ( Theatre by Somerset Maugham) 1-5

The story began, when Michael Gosselyn, fifty two year-old theater worker, met his wife Julia, a successful actress, in a room behind the scene. They had a conversation, and Michael told Julia about his new clerk. He added, that this guy was a devoted admirer of Julia’s talent. Then Gosselyn called his clerk and introduced him to Julia. Afterwards, the couple decided to invite young man to their house to lunch with them. During this visit, clerk was very shy, he smiled stiffly. But notwithstanding his general behavior, he payed some compliments to Julia. After the end of lunch, actress signed her own photograph and presented it to the clerk. Then her husband and the young man went away, and she started looking through her other photographs. After a couple of minutes she was completely in her reminding.
Then author gave small biographies of Julia and Michael to the reader. Gosselyn was mediocre actor, but in the beginning of his career, Michael had met Jimmie Langton, a flippant director, and joined his troupe. Because of this and his wonderful appearance, Gossleyn became rather famous. Julia had a different situation – she was a born actress. She began playing at the age of twelve, and after some period of time she was spotted by Jimmie, and invited her to join his troupe. He didn’t pay lots of money to his actors, but there was something extraordinary in his personality, and Julia agreed. In Jimmie’s troupe future conjoins met with each other.

The article published on the website http://www.guardian.co.uk on May 6, 2013 is headlined "Iron Man 3: the superhero sequel suits up for a cinematic smash". The article reports at length Iron Man 3 opened with the second-biggest debut of all time in the US at the weekend – a staggering $175.3m (£113m) – to become the year's highest-grossing film so far.

The author of the article, Ben Child carries a lot of comment on the new Iron Man film, for which 20 minutes of footage was screened to bloggers and critics earlier this week, which was titled plain old Iron Man 3.
The author of the article points out that Downey Jr was unquestionably the star of the obscenely successful The Avengers, though the Hulk certainly gave him a good run for his greenbacks. With the $1.5bn (£990m) superhero ensemble having taken the genre into new territory in terms of popularity with audiences, an awful lot is riding on Iron Man 3.

There is every reason to beleve that with an Oscar-winner,Ben Kingsley, as villain the Mandarin, one of Stark's best-known enemies, and the addition of Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall as Aldrich Killian and Maya Hansen, co-creators of the Extremis virus, Downey Jr was facing an entirely new level of adversity. Marvel apparently considered using the Mandarin for the first Iron Man film but decided it was too soon to introduce such a powerful figure, an entirely sensible move. Weak antagonists have been the traditional downfall of superhero sequels from Spider-Man 3 to the later Superman movies.

The article concludes by saying that Iron Man 3 arrived in the UK on 26 April and debuted in the US on 3 May and stresses that luckily, this was a film starring Downey Jr from the writer and director of Kiss Kiss with Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce and Don Cheadle.

To sum it up,  I can't share the author's view as I have not seen Iron Man yet. Anyway I found this article very useful, and of good value. The message of the author was clear to understand his opinion to this film and  , of course, his hero Downey Jr.

The article published on the website http://movies.nytimes.com on May 2, 2013 is headlined
"It’s Tough to Keep a Tune, but Easy to Fall in Love". The article carries a lot of comment on Christopher Menaul’s “1st Night” , which was considred to be a pallid gloss of a work that teems with deception, disguise and mistaken identity, not to mention humor.

The author of the article Stephen Holden supposes that he beauteous Nicoletta (Mía Maestro), who inspired the wager, was a mezzo-soprano recruited by Adam Drummond (Richard E. Grant), a wealthy British industrialist, to perform in an outdoor production of “Così Fan Tutte” at his palatial English country retreat.

Then the author points out that the sole purpose of this vanity project was to give Adam, who dropped onto the lawn in his private helicopter, the chance to play Don Alfonso. And another main character of this film was Tom (Julian Ovenden), the dashing rake with whom he made the bet, was an aspiring opera singer who had talked himself into the cast by claiming to be a protégé of Paolo Prodi (Stanley Townsend), a pompous impresario he had never met. Halfway into his scheme to seduce Nicoletta, he fell in love with her.

It was mentioned that “1st Night” had a glint of social satire. It played as an arch, hammily acted farce that demonstrated the incompatibility of old-fashioned stage acting with modern film technique.

The article concludes by saying that 1st Night was opened on Friday in Manhattanwith Richard E. Grant (Adam Drummond), Sarah Brightman (Celia), Mía Maestro (Nicoletta Lampedusa), Julian Ovenden (Tom Chambers), Oliver Dimsdale (Philip Ford), Susannah Fielding (Debbie Drew), Nigel Lindsay (Martin Mays), Stanley Townsend (Paolo Prodi) and Emma Williams (Tamsin Ford).

As for me, I can't share the author's view as I have not seen " 1st Night" yet. Anyway I found this article very useful and of good value. The message of the author was clear to understand a plot and character characteristics of the film.

The article published on a website http://http://www.guardian.co.uk on April 1, 2013 is headlined '
Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe set for starring roles in two classic tales'. The article reports at length that Harry Potter alumni Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe were lining up leading roles in two new versions of well-known tales: Cinderella and Frankenstein respectively.

The author of the article Andrew Pulver points out that Cinderella was seen very much in the mould of Disney's Alice in Wonderland and Oz the Great and Powerful, both highly visual reworkings of familiar tales.

It's an open secret that Watson, fresh from the well-liked teen flick The Perks of Being a Wallflower was being courted for Disney's live-action version of the Cinderella fairy story, to be directed by Kenneth Branagh. Then the author underlines that Watson had a somewhat tentative start to her post-Potter acting career, taking on a TV movie of Noel Streatfeild's Ballet Shoes and a small role in My Week With Marilyn as she appeared to concentrate more on fashion-related work. And Daniel Radclifef, in his turn, was set to play Igor in Frankenstein, a new take on Mary Shelley's classic gothic horror novel to be directed by Scots film-maker Paul McGuigan.

Giving appraisal of the situation it's worth while mentioning that according to the Wrap, it would be "a sci-fi take on this classic story about a creature produced through a scientific experiment", and Radcliffe's character would "pathologically dirty and dressed in old clown's clothing".

The article concludes by saying that Radcliffe recently proved his chops in period horror with the Susan Hill adaptation The Woman in Black, and would next be seen as Beat poet Allen Ginsberg in Sundance hit Kill Your Darlings.

To my mind, this article really puzzled me from the very beginning till the end. I found it well-planed, logically-constructed, skillfully-built. Having read the article, I deeply desired to watch this wonderful fairy tale with Emma Watcson and Daniel Radcliffe.

The article under the headline OBLIVION-REVIEW was taken from The Guardian.co.uk and was published on April 10. The author of the article was the Guardian's film critic Peter Bradshaw. He devoted his article to the review of Oblivion, a 2013 science fiction film co-written, produced and directed by Joseph Kosinski and based on his unpublished graphic novel of the same name edited by Radical Comics. Then the author pointed out that the film starred Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough,Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo, Zoë Bell, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

The author started by telling the reader that the main character of that film was Tom Cruise, who played Jack Harper, a tough and self-reliant soldier in the late 21st century after a victorious but desrtuctive battle against alien invaders. Then Peter underlined that his mission was to repair automated drones that exterminate the remaining alien scavengers ("Scavs") hidden on Earth. Jack and Victoria report to Sally ( Andrea Riseborough), a military commander stationed in a tetrahedral structure in Earth's orbit called "The Tet", which controlled the Hydro Rigs, machined that were extracting vital resources from the surface, and were being targeted by the Scavs. But Jack But Jack iwas plagued with weird mental images of a romantic encounter in pre-war New York and when he found a beautiful human survivor, Julia (Olga Kurylenko), she stirred intense memories, and it was clear that there was something the authorities are not telling him.

In the second part of the article( in a key one) Peter Bradshaw expressed his point of view, sayinng that on the one hand, this movie had some beautiful images of planetary, but on the other hand the story itself felt numbed, derectionless and dull.

As for me, I can't share the author's view as I have not seen Oblivion yet. Anyway I found this article very useful and of good value. The message of the author was clear to understand a plot and character characteristics of the film.
